Vacation rental cleaning checklist
What a turnover covers: the cleaning between one guest checking out and the next one arriving. This is the checklist every property in Cleanavo starts with. Each step says what the place should look like when the cleaner leaves, and the how is left to the person cleaning.

The checklist
Nine steps are on by default. Dusting and watering plants are there to add. Turn off any step that doesn't fit the place: a home with no carpet doesn't need vacuuming, and one that's all carpet doesn't need sweeping or mopping. The steps can be done in any order, and the products, tools and method are up to the cleaner.
Change bed linensDefault
- Every bed is made up with fresh linens.
- The used linens are folded and left for pickup.
Wipe countersDefault
- Countertops and the stovetop are clean, with no spills or crumbs.
- The microwave is clean inside and out.
- The outside of the refrigerator is clean.
Clean bathroomsDefault
- Toilets, sinks, showers and tubs are clean.
- Mirrors are clean.
- Toilet paper is restocked.
- The bathroom trash has a fresh bag.
Restock essentialsDefault
- Toilet paper, paper towels and soap are stocked to the levels in your additional instructions.
- Coffee and tea supplies are stocked the same way.
Wash and store dishesDefault
- No dishes are left dirty.
- Everything is dry and back where it belongs.
- The dishwasher is empty, if it had finished a cycle.
Dust surfaces
- Shelves, sills, blinds, ceiling fans and the tops of furniture are free of dust.
Vacuum floorsDefault
- Carpets, rugs and upholstery are clean, including under the furniture, into the corners, along the baseboards and on the stairs.
Sweep floorsDefault
- Every hard floor is clear of dirt and debris, including under furniture, inside closets and through the entryways.
Mop floorsDefault
- The hard floors are washed, and left clean and dry.
Take out trashDefault
- No room is left with trash in it.
- What was collected is in the outdoor bins.
- Every trash can has a fresh bag.
Water plants
- Indoor plants, and anything potted on the balcony or patio, are watered: damp soil rather than soaked.
- No standing water is left in the saucers.
Additional instructions
One note for anything particular to the property, like where the restocking supplies are kept and how many of each to leave out.
Before you leave
- All doors are locked, the front door included.
- All lights are off.
- The key is back in its original spot, if there is one.
What to keep at the property
The checklist restocks and remakes beds from what you leave there. Keep these on hand, and say where they are in your additional instructions:
- A clean set of linens for every bed. The used ones are folded and left for you to wash.
- Toilet paper, paper towels and soap, and how many of each to leave out.
- Coffee and tea supplies, and how much to leave out.
- Trash bags for every can, and outdoor bins for what's collected.
Cleaning products and equipment, like the vacuum, broom and mop, are the cleaner's to bring. On Cleanavo, if your checklist needs something a cleaner hasn't listed in their kit, the app tells them before they claim the cleaning.
Not on the list: what every Cleanavo cleaning includes
Photos and the arrival time aren't checklist steps, because you can't turn them off. Every cleaning has them:
- Arrival. You see when the cleaner arrived, next to the time they were expected.
- Photos before cleaning. One to four photos of every bedroom, every bathroom, the living room, the kitchen and the backyard, taken before any step can be ticked. They show how the last guests left the place.
- Each step as it's done. The steps on your checklist appear on the cleaning with the time each one was finished.
- Photos after cleaning. The same rooms are photographed again before the cleaning can be finished.
The photos stay on the cleaning afterwards, so you can compare before and after.
